It Is Finished
He bowed His head and said, “It is finished.”
And in that moment, sin was defeated,
death was diminished,
and hope was restored.
He bore our sins.
He carried our chains.
He paid a price we could never afford.
The stone was rolled away.
The grave was emptied.
History shifted in a single day.
But do we live
as though it changed everything?
They ran to the tomb
where His body had lain,
hearts heavy with sorrow and dread.
But heaven declared through the words of an angel,
“Why seek the living among the dead?
He is not here — He is risen.”
Yet still we struggle.
Still we strive.
Still we search for freedom
as if it hasn’t already arrived.
We exhaust ourselves trying to earn
what was freely given.
We wait for rescue
when the prison has already been opened.
He broke the chains.
He tore down the walls.
He threw away the key.
He did it for you.
He did it for me.
So why do we linger
on the dusty ground?
Why do we live
as though we are bound?
Open your eyes —
the walls are down.
Lift your head.
Stand up now.
He wiped the tears from your eyes.
His hand is reaching.
Grace is calling.
The gospel is simple,
yet somehow we miss it:
We are not prisoners.
We are free.
Because when He said,
“It is finished,”
He meant it.
For you and for me.
A few years ago on the Saturday before Easter, i was thinking about how we’re in the in-between, on good Friday we reflected on how Jesus died, on Easter Sunday He rises, and we will celebrate our freedom in His death and in His resurrection.
In my reflection I had to ask myself, how many of us live like it’s still Saturday, we celebrate Sunday, the resurrection, but we still live in this waiting period, we’re still in a state of waiting to be freed, still waiting for our burdens to be lifted, we still run to the tomb expecting that stone to be there, when it’s already been removed, only to be met with Jesus, gazing upon us, telling us its done, it’s finished, I’ve taken it, I’ve gone to the cross, I’ve freed you.
There is no more in-between, no more waiting, He already chose YOU, He already died for YOU, He already said “it is finished” it’s up to us to live as if it’s already been done.
Saturday is over!
